Freeride means skiing away from groomed runs, in powder and wide-open spaces. It is also terrain that requires knowledge and equipment you never use on the pistes. Here is how to know if you are ready, what to bring, and how our instructors guide your first off-piste turns in Crans-Montana, Verbier and Zermatt.<\/p>\n<h2>1. Are you ready for freeride?<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/activalpine.com\/en\/activite-hiver\/ski-freeride\/\">Freeride is for advanced to expert skiers<\/a>, teenagers and adults. A few benchmarks to know if that is you:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>you ski every run in the resort, including black runs, while keeping your speed under control;<\/li>\n<li>you link your turns without stopping, even when the snow is uneven (moguls, crusty or packed snow);<\/li>\n<li>you have already enjoyed skiing at the edge of the pistes or after a fresh snowfall.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Not quite there yet? <a href=\"https:\/\/activalpine.com\/en\/activite-hiver\/skiing-private-lessons\/\">A private lesson on the pistes<\/a> lets you work precisely on what you are missing before going off-piste.<\/p>\n<h2>2. Why go with an instructor?<\/h2>\n<p>Off the marked pistes, the terrain is neither secured nor checked by the ski patrol. Avalanche danger, cliff bands or crevasses are not always visible. With an instructor, you enjoy freeride with confidence:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>a methodical and strict approach to risk management<\/strong>: reading the terrain, choosing routes according to the day&#8217;s conditions, safety advice at every step;<\/li>\n<li><strong>step-by-step progress<\/strong>: first off-piste turns at the edge of the ski area to start with, then new lines, lesser-known areas and legendary descents when you are ready;<\/li>\n<li><strong>lasting learning<\/strong>: your instructor explains their choices so that you build your own mountain knowledge.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If conditions are not safe, the instructor adapts or cancels the outing. You are then offered another date, or the service is fully refunded.<\/p>\n<h2>3. Understanding avalanche danger<\/h2>\n<p>In Switzerland, the avalanche bulletin from the WSL Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research (SLF) is published every day at 5 pm, for the following day. When the danger is considerable or higher, it is updated in the morning at 8 am. It uses a 5-level European scale:<\/p>\n<table>\n<tr><th>Level<\/th><th>What it means off-piste<\/th><\/tr>\n<tr><td>1 \u2013 low<\/td><td>Generally favourable situation.<\/td><\/tr>\n<tr><td>2 \u2013 moderate<\/td><td>Mostly favourable situation; choose your route carefully.<\/td><\/tr>\n<tr><td>3 \u2013 considerable<\/td><td>Critical situation, the trickiest for backcountry users: avoid the very steep slopes indicated in the bulletin.<\/td><\/tr>\n<tr><td>4 \u2013 high<\/td><td>Very critical situation: stick to moderately steep terrain; less experienced people stay on the pistes.<\/td><\/tr>\n<tr><td>5 \u2013 very high<\/td><td>Exceptional situation: give up off-piste skiing.<\/td><\/tr>\n<\/table>\n<div class=\"aa-tip\" style=\"background:#F3F8FB;border-left:4px solid #43A6D5;padding:14px 18px;margin:0 0 1.1em;\"><strong>Key point:<\/strong> &#8220;considerable&#8221;, level 3, is only in the middle of the scale, yet it is the trickiest situation for off-piste skiers. That is exactly where a professional makes the difference in choosing the route.<\/div>\n<h2>4. Essential equipment<\/h2>\n<p>In addition to your skis, boots and a helmet, three items are mandatory for freeride:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>an avalanche transceiver<\/strong>, switched on and worn from the start;<\/li>\n<li><strong>a shovel<\/strong>;<\/li>\n<li><strong>a probe.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This equipment is not included in the price of the lesson, but rental is available on request, on +41 79 855 45 45. Equipment is useless if you do not know how to use it: take advantage of your outing to ask your instructor to show you.<\/p>\n<h2>5. The price includes personal coaching by the instructor, a tailor-made programme, and technical, teaching and safety advice. It does not include the lift pass, equipment rental (skis, boots, helmet, avalanche transceiver, probe, shovel) or ski insurance.<\/p>\n<h2>7. How an outing works<\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Welcome:<\/strong> your instructor meets you at the agreed meeting point. You discuss your level and what you want to do, and they check your equipment, transceiver included.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Warm-up:<\/strong> a few runs to find your feet, observe your skiing and choose the terrain.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Off-piste:<\/strong> reading the terrain, choosing the line, deep-snow technique. Your instructor guides and corrects you on every run.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Debrief:<\/strong> they review the day with you and suggest the next steps to keep progressing.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2>8.
